This week...

Looking at this week…

This week we will continue to read, read, read.  We will finish up with our Leprechaun poem and put that in our poetry journal.  We have reviewed and practiced spelling lots of different short vowel word families.  This week we will review with a mixture of short o and short e words.  This will be our word study.  We will continue to review B, M and E and work on characters and setting when reading.  We have had some great reading this week in reading groups and the students are really working on reading with some expression and focusing on that exclamation mark!  Way to go!

As this marking period winds down, we will spend the week doing a variety of math skills.  We will do some graphing, some addition, telling time and fractions.  I have graded many papers this 9 weeks in math as the math SOLS have been increasingly harder.  Please keep this in mind when report cards are issued.

On Monday we will have some St. Patrick’s Day fun.  The rest of the week we will continue our focus on Spring weather, even though the temperature may be well below where I’d like it, HA!  We will talk about characteristics of spring and make a spring book.

Upcoming Events:

Spring break begins Friday March 29- April 5, School resumes Monday, April 8.
Family Bingo Night- Friday, March 22
Kindergarten Egg Hunt- Thursday, March 28
End of this 9 weeks- Thursday, March 28
Kindergarten Registration Begins- Monday, March 25 ( please do this on the computer first if you have a little one at home ready for K )

Looking forward to another great week…

Looking Ahead....

Looking Ahead…

This week we will focus on the letter X.  We will also continue to practice spelling CVC words working on short e words.  We will focus on the en and et families.  We will review the words fantasy and realism and how to determine what our literature falls under.  We will continue to do reading groups and will continue to work on our Dr. Seuss poem for concept of word.  We will practice writing the letter X and also begin to write short stories independently.  We will talk about different ideas for writing and the students will choose what they write about.  We will focus on writing at least 2-3 sentences.

This week in math we will learn about fractions.  I will begin with the terms symmetric and non symmetric, focusing on symmetry.  We will look at many shapes and determine if the shapes have been divided equally or symmetric.  We will then talk about the fraction ½.  We will compare whole and half using various projects and games.

We will also review maps and globes this week.  We will also begin to read maps and create a few of our own maps.  We will make our own books to help us identify where we are in reference to our bedroom, house, street, town and state.

WES teachers and staff have formed a Relay for Life team.  We are asking our students and their families to get involved.  We will be collecting pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters over the next few weeks.  This coming week we will collect pennies.  If you are able to contribute and want to send in a handful of change, I can sort it out with the class.

Thank you for continuing to do homework and being diligent about checking behavior charts.  We continue to do a great job and I am so impressed with the learning going on each and every day.

Have a great rest of the weekend!
Mrs. Beltz
