Week at a glance..

This week we will continue to do reading groups and literacy stations which are in full affect!  We are loving the new books and being able to read lots.  We will begin word study groups this week.  This means that your child may be going to a different classroom for word study instruction based on their spelling level.  We will not give word study this week as we want the students to be comfortable with the switching and a new teacher.  This will only be for 15 minutes each day.  Please let me know if you have any questions about this.

We will begin to talk about local government and communities.

We will learn about place value in math.  We will focus on grouping objects by tens and ones and writing a number associated with that amount of objects.  We will do some counting and play some games with this math concept.

Writing has been progressing and they have been doing a great job with their new organizers.  I hope you noticed some great writing last week in Thursday folders.

Reminders for this week:
Interim reports come home on Thursday.  I will also be asking to conference with some of you in the near future.
EARLY RELEASE on Friday...dismissal time will be 12:25.  This is ONLY for middle and elementary.  NOT FOR HIGH SCHOOL.
Please continue to read, read, read!

Have a great week!

Celebrating Diversity!

We made it through PALS testing!  We have loose ends to tie up this week but for the most part we are finished.  That means we can finally begin reading groups!  That is very exciting for me and I know the class enjoys them too!

This week we will begin our Houghton Mifflin Reading Series.  This will focus on reading with the entire class and teach us different skills each week.  We will focus on short a words this week as well as story sequencing.  We will do one more week of word study review.  Next week, we will start word study groups.  These groups will help us differentiate with the entire first grade.  This means that your child may go to a different classroom/teacher for this part of instruction.  I will give you more information on this @ Back to School Night.

We will continue to build our solid foundation of number sense.  We will be counting and playing games while learning in math this week.

Our focus in Social Studies is diversity.  We are learning about how we are different and families are different in our very own communities.

Please continue to review sight words each week and read, read, read.

Things to remember:
It gets chilly in our room so please send your child to school with a sweatshirts or light coat.
Snack daily
Homework daily as well as signing your child's behavior chart.
Picture day- Tuesday, September 24
Back to School Night- Tuesday, September 24 beginning @ 6:30
If you are able to contribute extra snack, it would be greatly appreciated.

Have a great week!
Sincerely,

Welcome Fall!  I think it may finally be Fall.  We have enjoyed recess time even though it has been HOT outside.  Thank you for continuing to check communication folders and for completing homework returning it each Friday.  Also, thank you for sending SNACK in daily with your child.

This week we begin PALS testing.  This process will begin Monday morning and continue through early next week.  When results are complete, I will start to schedule conferences with the most needed first and so on.
We will continue to review number sense with math games, dot plates and ten frames.  Ask your child what a ten frame is and have them draw one!  We will begin our All About Me unit and talk about how we are all different focusing on the word diversity.  I sent home a brown paper bag for your child to fill with 5 items that help describe them and their favorite things.  The items need to fit in the bag.  They should not be fragile and should not be expensive items.  This is due back to school on TUESDAY.  We will be sharing them with each other on Tuesday and Wednesday.

We are learning about the writing process and have been doing a great job.  Check your child's Thursday folder this week for some awesome first grade writing.

Dates to remember:

Attraction books have gone home, if you are not purchasing it, please return it to school.

Happy First Week of School and More.....

We made it through week one! Here are just a few pictures from day 1, week 1.

Thank you to everyone for sending in all important information in a speedy manner.  We are off to a great start and I am so impressed with how much this class remembered over the summer.  Things to know/remember for this week:

We will continue to review phonics, concept of word, and phonemic awareness.  We will continue to review K sight words and will be introduced to our dictionaries this week.  We have been doing writing and learning about the writing process.  We will focus on the writing process each week.  We have also begun word study and will continue this throughout the year.

We are reviewing numbers to 30 and will begin to learn numbers to 50.  We will play lots of games that help us review number sense.

We will finish learning about citizenship and school rules this week.

Great job with homework this week and I am impressed with how many students did some optional homework also.  I have attached paper to this week's homework to make things easier for you.  Please continue to send in your child's communication folder with their behavior chart.  They have been doing an awesome job earning PAWS and purring with pride.

Way to go wildcats.  Looking forward to another week!

Looping 2 First

As all of you know, we are LOOPING 2 First!  I am thrilled to have this opportunity with your children and am looking forward to another awesome year with them.  I hope you all had the chance to look over the news letter I sent home on Friday.  Our schedule has changed somewhat and the way we do Encore this year will also change.  We will be breaking into small groups on Day 1 and going to Encore with other first grade classes.  We are the 6th first grade and we only have 5 Encore classes.  Your child will stay with the same teacher throughout the year.  Your child's Encore schedule is specific to them and listed in the front of their communication folder.  This folder will come home with them each night.  Please be vigilant about checking this for behavior, notes, homework and Encore schedule.

As always, please email me, write a note or call the school if you have any questions or concerns about your child.

Enjoy the remaining days of summer. I am so excited to see everyone on Tuesday morning ready to learn, grow and have fun!

Sincerely,
Mrs. Beltz
