Kindergarten Readiness Week 2

This week the focus continues to be on name work….
·         Continue to ask your child to point to specific letters in his/her name.
·         Ask them if they can find that same letter in a magazine, newspaper, scrap mail, page in a book, etc.
Ex.  Find the J in your name, can you find a another j on this page?

Once they have this skill mastered, begin to have them practice holding a pencil, pen, marker, or any writing material you have access to and have them trace over their name that you have already written for them.  Have them practice saying the letters as they write them.

This week the oral language review is to continue to memorize the poem The Wheels on the Bus….
The wheels on the bus go round and round,
round and round, round and round.
The wheels on the bus go round and round,
all through the town.

·         Practice taking turns saying a line from the song
·         Have your child guess what word comes next in the poem
·          If you stop, have them finish the song where you left off.

Feel free to leave a comment or ask any questions you might have and I will definitely write you back!

Kindergarten Readiness

This year one of my goals is to send out weekly emails throughout the summer to all incoming Kindergarten families.  The email will give the families one specific learning goal for the week.  I am also including a song/poem for their child to learn.  Everything I am asking them to go over or teach their child will be simple, easy to do with little effort and little to no supplies ensuring that everyone can participate.  Here is this weeks Kindergarten FOCUS:

***Write your child's name on a piece of paper, napkin, tissue, anything you can and ask them to read their name.  If they can do this with ease, write their name among other words and names and see if they can find their name.  You can take it a step further and begin to see if they can find letters in their name.  Example Name: Jennie-----can you find the J, can you find the n.  Being able to find their name will help them feel more comfortable at school and give them confidence during the first week.

***This weeks oral/talking focus:
Teach your child the song/poem The Wheels on the Bus.  We will be focusing on building oral language skills or talking skills throughout the year.  This specific song will be used the first 2 weeks of school.  The words are as follows:
The wheels on the bus go round and round,
round and round, round and round.
The wheels on the bus go round and round,
All through the town.

We DO NOT expect your child to be able to read this poem just sing/say it.  As they learn the first part, you can add more versus;

the wipers on the bus go swish
the driver on the bus goes move on back
the change on the bus goes clank
the baby on the bus goes wah
the man on the bus goes shush

Come back next week to see our NEW Kindergarten FOCUS!
