This will be a busy week for us.  We have lots of fun and exciting things to celebrate.  This week we will focus on the formal teaching of the letter h and focus on counting syllables in words.  We will focus on the poem Squirrel, Squirrel that we learned last week to help develop our concept of word.  We will continue to do word study, reading groups and literacy stations.

Fire, Fire, Fire!

Many Thanks to Mr. Schoenberger!
Our little firefighters learned and reviewed fire safety with the help of Mr. Schoenberger, a firefighter/search and rescue in Fairfax County.  He reviewed the emergency number 911, having a safe meeting place, how to stop, drop and roll, and what to do in the event of a fire.  He also showed them all his equipment and what they used the equipment for.  We had a BLAST and learned a lot!

Weekly Preview- Oct. 15

This week we will start reading groups.  PALS testing is finally finished and I have put together groups of students who are working on the same SOLS for reading practice.  We will continue to focus on Concept of Word, Word Study and Rhyming as a whole class and again in small groups.

We will finish learning about the differences between the past and today.  We then begin to learn about positional words.  We will learn how to use the words, under, near, next to, behind and  above.  This is a math SOL as well as a social studies SOL for Kindergarten.

We will begin to learn how to do math exemplars.  These are word problems that we learn to break down and solve using pictures and by finding patterns in math.

We will have a guidance lesson this week with Mrs. Kopley and will also have a special guest visitor this week to help reinforce fire safety as October comes to an end.

Reminders:
Book Fair is this week-  we preview books on Monday, and purchase on Thursday.  You DO NOT have to purchase the books on your child's wish list.  This is only a guideline for you if you choose to give your child money.

Please continue to send in a snack daily with your child!

What do these two pictures have in common?

This week we learned how to identify the penny and the nickel.  We also did an experiment to learn what product would clean a penny the best; water, salt or ketchup.  Guess which won!  Ask your child about the fun!
